Interview: Lulu McClatchy talks SuperGirly: Return of the Pop Princess

June 2023

This August, Lulu McClatchy brings pop parody show “SuperGirly: Return of the Pop Princess” to the Camden Fringe. The show is set to play at the Camden Comedy Club from 14th-17th August and promises a generous dose of pop-themed micky-taking. Here, Lulu chats about the show, influences and advice for those starting out.

So tell me a about SuperGirly: Return of the Pop Princess.

SuperGirly – Return of the Pop Princess, is a rollercoaster ride of pop parodies, poking fun at celebrity and the business of pop music. It’s a nod to the world A-list Kardashianland when anything goes and usually does. A show for all pop music worshipers: girl power, boy band fans, Fame Monsters and even Taylor Swift lovers are all welcome to come along. And if you hate pop music you will also definitely love this show as well.

How would you describe the style of SuperGirly?

It’s musical comedy stand up. It pushes the boundaries of the politically incorrect and is not for the faint hearted. It’s a live singing, dancing, musical glamorous experience.

Now, we all know that bringing a show to audiences is no easy feat, never mind in the current climate. If you had to name the highest high and the most valuable hiccup so far, what would you say?

It’s always a high seeing an audience react to your work when you have written something yourself and they resonate with it. SO I guess the low is when it’s harder to get audiences in the current climate. I find once you get them in they come back and word spreads, but initially getting them through the door is definitely harder than it used to be and there is a lot more competition out there, good and bad.

And what can you tell me about your cast and creative team?

I am the cast and Creative Team. My name is Lulu McClatchy and I’ve been performing and writing this show for over 20 years! OMG! It’s now like another personality I put on. I also make the costumes and decide what I want the show’s themes to be – and I pay all the bills. But as well as SuperGirly, I am a Film and TV actress and Writer as well as a Professional Tarot reader. Yes, for real.

Are there trigger warnings or age restrictions to be aware of?

12 and over, a show for Men, Women and all pronouns.

Quick fire time. You are offering audiences big laughs with this show, so tell me: who makes you laugh most?

I love anything verging on the wrong with humour. Ricky Gervais, Sebabtian Maniscalo, Amy Schumer are faves and anyone taking a risk and sticking to their truth without conforming, so their comedy doesn’t suffer.

The best thing about being involved with this industry?

The audiences. You never know what is going to happen on any given night, You can have your show ready and be prepared, but every show will be different depending on your audience, and that is what always keeps it fresh.

Your own tastes and influences when it comes to theatre/ live work?

I love musicals and plays. And I love good stand up. I say good stand up because I have seen A LOT. And I love seeing a great live band too.

Dream role or venue to play?

It’s changed over the years. I’d love to play the lead , Annie Wilkes in Misery on stage. Or Miss Hannigan in Annie. And I have written a musical film I want to get made soon. That’s a dream role, to get that on stage as well. So if anyone is interested, let me know…

Best advice you’ve been given when it comes to live performance/ theatre-making?

Don’t read reviews. Or have someone vet them for you. They are an opinion and sometimes can really knock your performance if you read something before you go on. It’s best to try and get someone to collect the ones you can use and leave the others. Just keep working on your art and improving no matter what.

In one line or less, why should audiences come to see this show?

SuperGirly can guarantee you will come out with a smile on your face and you will never hear the songs on the radio the same way again.

So there you have it! You can catch Lulu McClatchy’s “SuperGirly: Return of the Pop Princess” at the Camden Comedy Club from 14th-17th August 2023 – more information and tickets can be found here.
